Fashion Photography: Creating Model Students

A fashion photography exhibition and catwalk – a real opportunity to create model students!

A group of second year photography students at Coventry University will be putting on an exhibition of their work in February and have enlisted the help of some fashion graduates and some fellow students.

The eight photographers are all interested in fashion, so it seemed logical to pair the two together and exhibit their portfolio of photographs that cover a wide spectrum of fashion including fine art, editorial and portraiture based.

The added bonus to the exhibition; is that it comes with a catwalk show as well

One of the organisers, and second year photography student, Evan Merner, said:

“We have to hold our own exhibition as part of our professional experience module and as we all liked fashion, the idea of having a catwalk show as well seemed the logical thing to do.

“We have enlisted the help of four fashion graduates who will be showing their collections and we have also put the appeal out to any students who would like to take part in the show, either as models or backstage crew to assist with the outfit changes.”

As a thank you to the fashion graduates, the photographers have offered to photograph their collections for their own portfolios.

Evan added:

“We really wanted as much collaboration between students as we could. It is a great opportunity to get involved with the catwalk show for the fashion graduates, but also for current students who have an interest in working in the fashion industry. They will get the chance to see how things work behind the scenes. It should be a lot of fun.

“Even though the event is over a month away, it has already been excellent experience for networking with fellow students and making the sort of contacts that are key within a media-based industry.”

The team offered the opportunity to help behind the scenes with dressing the models to all students, but particularly Art and Design ones as they thought it would be good experience for the new intake of fashion students. Also working with the fashion graduates, who already have experience of catwalks, has been a great help to the photographers.

The event itself will be taking place at ‘The Box’ at Fargo Village on 24 February from 7pm until 11pm with the catwalk show starting at 8pm.

The entertainment includes music supplied by local DJ, Jason Fox and Edward Fuller, a second year media production student, will act as MC for the night commenting on the designs and co-hosting the show. There will also be welcome drinks and a chance to mingle.

Evan concluded:

“We want to create a fun, social environment where people can stick around after the catwalk show and look at the exhibition and have a chat with us and our guests.”
